Kevin Shanahan, who created the BJ Birdy mascot for the Toronto Blue Jays, was surprised to see the character return for the club's 50th season without prior notification. Shanahan, who still holds the copyright, expressed disappointment at not being contacted. He created BJ Birdy at age 20 and performed as the mascot for two decades, gaining fame for his antics. Despite his contributions, he was let go in 1999 without a formal farewell.
