In Chelsea, Michigan, a community of about 5,300 residents rallied together to assist Serendipity Books in its relocation. Approximately 300 volunteers participated in a 'book brigade,' efficiently passing along nearly 9,100 books from the old shop to a new storefront. The heartfelt community effort took only a couple of hours, emphasizing unity and support. Owner Michelle Tuplin expressed her gratitude for the volunteers, while employee Kaci Friss highlighted the town's close-knit feel, reflecting on how residents genuinely care for each other. The moving process was not only practical but created shared moments and camaraderie among participants.
The volunteers formed a pair of lines as they passed off each title - about 9,100 in all - from the shop's former spot to a new building.
Owner Michelle Tuplin was astounded and grateful for the tremendous helping hand. 'It was a practical way to move the books, but it also was a way for everybody to have a part.'
Kaci Friss, one of the employees, said the support for Serendipity reminded her 'how special this community is.'
Video posted on the business' Instagram page showed residents of all ages continuously handing off books one at a time until each landed on a shelf.
