Toronto has initiated a multi-year plan to hire 362 paramedics and EMS staff to meet the growing demand for emergency services. Mayor Olivia Chow emphasized the need for quick response times, especially amid rising incidents of violence. Reports indicated significant increases in instances where no ambulances were available. Union representatives noted high burnout levels among paramedics. This staffing increase is seen as essential to improving response times, particularly in the wake of recent critical incidents involving emergency calls.
"Torontonians deserve a paramedic service that is quick to respond in an emergency because people cannot wait. A service that will be there for them when they need it," Chow said.
"It's been a difficult year, lots of difficult calls. We have a number of measures to support our staff internally, but we recognize it has a toll on them," said Jordison.
"They are under a tremendous amount of pressure right now, and that certainly is something that we're trying to find a solution to and continue to be open to further solutions," said Shirer.
