Slate's debut vehicle starkly contrasts with the tech-heavy approach of competitors like Tesla. Their new two-door pickup truck prioritizes simplicity and affordability, with a price tag under $20,000 after incentives. The truck has an index-card-sized display and lacks features typical in modern vehicles, such as an infotainment system or internet connectivity. Instead, Slate opts for a minimalistic design, focusing on essential functions. Interestingly, they allow for over-the-air updates via smartphone connectivity, enabling basic features while keeping costs low.
We didn't want to force connectivity on everyone, and raise the price because of connectivity for everyone, when you don't actually need it.
If Tesla makes something resembling the iPhone of cars, then Slate's two-door pickup truck is more like a Nokia flip phone.
