Pol O Conghaile: The 'human delta' and why some hotels feel more special than others
Briefly

Nearly 40 hotels across Ireland were visited over two months. The primary determinant of a memorable meal or night away is the emotional experience created for the guest. Physical details like thread counts, cocktails, decor, or expensive refurbishments do not guarantee memorability. Small, human-driven touches — warmth from staff, attentive service, thoughtful gestures, atmosphere and the way people are treated — consistently make stays stand out. Restaurants and hotels are fundamentally rooms and buildings; what transforms them into unforgettable places is how guests are made to feel. Genuine hospitality creates lasting memories beyond material investments.
What makes a meal or a night away unforgettable? A restaurant is just a room, after all. A hotel is just a building.
Over the past two months, I've visited almost 40 hotels in Ireland. And I've been reminded that what makes a place memorable is not the thread counts, the cocktails, or the millions spent on a refurb. It's how you are made to feel.
