Six friends created a shared bank account to eliminate the hassle of splitting vacation costs. Each member contributed 20 AUD per week leading up to the trip, and the pooled funds covered flights, hotels, groceries, dinners, and other expenses. The account balance reached roughly $2,609 USD before their first trip using the method. The idea originated after a Hobart weekend when separate payments required hours reconciling bank statements. The approach received mixed social reactions, with some praising the convenience for bills and rides and others expressing concerns about misuse; trust among long-term friends reduced those concerns.
The shared account was born during a weekend trip to Hobart, Tasmania, in 2023 - about an hour flight away from their hometown. Each friend paid their own way, and it was a total headache. "It led to two hours over breakfast on our last day poring through bank statements and trying to work out who owed who what after a weekend of 'I'll get this one, you get the next one,'" Brindell tells Bustle.
Brindell's TikTok, which has over 700,000 likes, stirred up mixed reactions. Some commenters loved the idea. "It can also pay the restaurant bills and Ubers, then you're not arguing over it," one person wrote. "Just pay [with] the holiday card!" Others worried their friends would steal the money or sneakily use it for something other than a vacation, but Brindell says that's never been a concern for her group.
