"Highway 1 is an emotional experience for so many people, and its early reopening reconnects the full wonder of Ragged Point, San Simeon and Cambria with our neighbors to the north in Monterey,"
"We are thrilled to welcome visitors to experience the magic of this coastal roadway from end-to-end."
"gateway to California's coast and the lifeblood of the Big Sur economy"
"bring much-needed relief to small businesses and families in Big Sur and the surrounding communities who have shown remarkable resilience and strength."
State Route 1 along the Pacific Coast reopened Wednesday after a landslide-related closure that began in 2023. The coastal stretch opened months earlier than the March estimate, restoring continuous access between Ragged Point, San Simeon, Cambria, and Monterey. Highway 1 offers scenic Pacific Ocean views, beaches, historic landmarks, towns, vineyards, and redwood forests. The closure was the longest to date and caused an estimated $438 million in lost visitor spending. The reopening is expected to ease strain on local businesses and families, while the USGS notes 75 miles of Big Sur coastline remain highly landslide-prone with over 1,500 mapped slides.
