The tragic crash of Air India Flight 171 in Ahmedabad resulted in the loss of at least 28 lives on the ground and nearly all on the flight. Experts indicate that ongoing urban development has dangerously encroached upon airports, creating significant safety hazards. Multiple stakeholders have raised concerns about the poor regulation surrounding airport construction and the urgency of implementing air traffic safety measures, as India's extensive infrastructure growth lags behind safety standards observed in other countries, like the United States.
Many of us have been pointing out that you are announcing growth, but we are terribly behind on safety, said Mohan Ranganathan, a former instructor pilot and aviation safety consultant.
We need more airports, but create them a distance away from the city, said Jitender Bhargava, a former Air India executive director.
