Amateur archaeologists at Vindolanda near Hadrian's Wall uncovered a statue of the Roman goddess of victory, Victoria, while participating in an excavation program. This achievement marks a celebratory moment in the long history of digs at the site, particularly for veteran volunteers Jim and Dilys Quinlan, who emphasized the importance of their work as both couples and individuals. They find great joy and fulfillment in uncovering history while enjoying camaraderie and learning. Their discovery contributes to understanding ancient Roman military culture and enhances public appreciation for archaeological efforts.
We've spent the vast majority of our annual leave at Vindolanda over the years. As veteran diggers, it is without doubt the most wonderful thing we've ever done.
It's the best form of relaxation that we know of. We eat well, sleep well, we're in good company and there's always more to learn.
