Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, leader of the opposition movement Holy Struggle, has been arrested on charges of plotting a coup against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. This comes amidst escalating tensions following Armenia's military defeats to Azerbaijan in 2020. Pashinyan reported that the Investigative Committee had foiled a plan by Galstanyan and others to destabilize the country and seize power. The group reportedly consisted of around 1,000 recruits, including former military personnel, tasked with actions aimed at inciting violence and lawlessness against the current government.
Law enforcement officers prevented a large and sinister plan by the criminal-oligarchic clergy' to destabilize the Republic of Armenia and seize power.
The Investigative Committee had filed criminal charges against Galstanyan and 15 others, who they said had acquired the means and tools necessary to commit a terrorist attack.
Galstanyan has previously expressed his desire to replace Pashinyan as prime minister, although he is unable to hold office due to being a dual Armenian-Canadian citizen.
The group had recruited about 1,000 people, mainly former soldiers and police officers, and divided them into strike groups.
