Asda superstore in east London set to close over rent hike

Asda will close its Stepney Green store later this year because of rising rent costs. The store’s closure, located in Anchor Retail Park, is confirmed by the chain, which is entering a collective consultation with employees regarding job opportunities at other locations. An Asda spokesperson indicated that the increased rent made the store financially unviable. The Stepney Green store features an opticians, pharmacy, cafe, and offers click and collect services for customers.
An Asda superstore in Stepney Green is set to close later this year due to a rise in rent. The chain confirmed the planned closure of its shop in Anchor Retail Park, Mile End Road.
As part of the consultation, roles elsewhere in the business and at nearby stores will be discussed and offered to current employees where appropriate.
Despite the great work of all our colleagues at our Stepney Green supermarket, unfortunately upcoming increases in the rent offered to us by the current landlords mean that this store will not be viable commercially.
The shop has an opticians, a pharmacy which is open seven days a week and a cafe. It also offers a click and collect service where shoppers can order online and book a slot to pick up their goods.
