The UK is experiencing its sunniest and hottest summer, with almost 1,200 hours of sunshine by July. This figure could surpass the record of 1,587 hours from 2003. There have been 250 more sunshine hours compared to the last 20-year average. The country has endured its fourth heatwave, with temperatures soaring and considerable water shortages in five areas facing drought. So far, 79 days have exceeded 20°C, marking this season as one of the warmest on record. Forecasts show continued high temperatures into the weekend.
Almost 1,200 hours of sunshine had been recorded by July this year, according to the Met Office, putting the UK on track to beat its previous sunshine record.
Brits have enjoyed 250 hours more sunshine this year than the last 20-year average, as the UK endures its fourth heatwave of the summer.
Officials have stated the country is suffering from 'nationally significant' water shortages as five areas remain in drought and six in dry weather status.
So far, there have been 79 days where temperatures have exceeded 20°C, the most ever recorded for this stage of the year.
