Businesses employing illegal migrant workers will now incur fines up to £60,000 per worker as HM Revenue & Customs and UK Visas and Immigration intensify enforcement actions. Inspections have increased, leading to a notable rise in suspensions and revocations of sponsor licences, particularly among Skilled Worker visa holders in sectors like social care. From January to June 2024, 833 licences were suspended compared to 569 in all of 2023. The actions are driven by political pressure and significant cases of visa abuse within the care sector, impacting many migrant workers.
"In recent weeks, there have been multiple reports confirming that UKVI has increased compliance visits to sponsor licence holders. This has led to a dramatic increase in the number of licence suspensions and revocations - and an uptick in enforcement visits targeting illegal working."
"The penalty for employing illegal workers now stands at £45,000 per worker for a first offence, and £60,000 for repeat offenders within a three-year period."
