GCHQ has revealed plans for a pioneering national AI cyber shield intended to be the first of its kind globally. The system is expected to become operational within five years and will use AI agents to detect and flag threats across critical national infrastructure, including airlines and telecoms firms. The initiative aims to reduce the likelihood of cyberattacks, referencing a prior breach that targeted Jaguar Land Rover. The proposals were announced by GCHQ director Anne Keast-Butler during the agency’s inaugural annual lecture at Bletchley Park. Keast-Butler described artificial intelligence as an “unstoppable force” and emphasized the need for the UK to harness increasingly autonomous technology for good.
