Fr Paul Murphy, a priest, was attacked by a teenager outside Renmore Barracks in Galway on August 15, 2024. The boy, now 17, received a 10-year detention sentence. Reflecting on the incident, Fr Murphy noted how the car window malfunction saved his life, as it opened only two-thirds. He described the attack, recalling 20 deliberate stabbing attempts in 90 seconds. Despite the traumatic encounter, he focused on survival tactics, ultimately driving into the barracks to escape his assailant, who pursued him, demonstrating a horrifying intent to kill.
"I remember all the details of it. While I didn't remember his face, I do remember the determination on his face and the real intent to put an end to my life."
"If it had opened the full way, I would be dead," he said. I had a certain protection in my car. I was able to take my foot off the brake and the car started up."
