India and Pakistan trade heavy fire in Kashmir as tensions escalate
Briefly

Indian and Pakistani forces exchanged heavy gunfire and shelling along the Kashmir frontier, resulting in civilian deaths and injuries, worsening tensions since a deadly attack last month. In Pakistan-administered Kashmir, Pakistani officials reported four civilian deaths, with local accounts describing the situation as unprecedented. Both nations blame each other for the violence, igniting a cycle of retaliatory airstrikes and accusations, including claims of drone attacks. Civilian casualties have risen sharply, prompting unease as hostilities escalate, leading to a significant security crisis in the region.
"We're used to hearing the exchange of fire between Pakistan and India at the Line of Control, but last night was different," said Mohammad Shakil, a resident of Chakothi, a village near the frontier.
According to Pakistani officials, Indian airstrikes killed 31 civilians and their forces shot down five Indian fighter jets in retaliation.
The conflict intensified after a deadly attack on 22 April that left 26 civilians dead, primarily Hindu Indian tourists, which heightened tensions between the nations.
Both nations accused each other of carrying out drone attacks, but independent verification of such claims remains unconfirmed.
