Jersey approves assisted dying law
"Jersey would have one of the safest and most transparent assisted dying laws in the world. The proposals contain strong safeguards and reflect the clear wishes of the public, who have spoken through citizens' juries and repeated surveys. For far too long, terminally ill people were denied the right to decide the manner and timing of their own deaths. Today, Jersey has changed that."
"Those eligible are people with terminal illnesses causing unbearable suffering where they are expected to die within six months, or 12 months for those with neurodegenerative conditions such as Parkinson's and motor neurone disease (MND). Both Crown dependencies have set residency requirements for eligibility - 12 months for Jersey and five years for the Isle of Man."
Jersey has passed landmark legislation permitting terminally ill adults to end their lives with medical assistance. Eligible individuals must have terminal illnesses causing unbearable suffering with expected death within six months, or twelve months for neurodegenerative conditions like Parkinson's and motor neurone disease. The law requires twelve months residency in Jersey. Thirty-two politicians voted in favor while sixteen opposed. Jersey becomes the second British Isles jurisdiction to fully approve assisted dying, following the Isle of Man. The legislation includes strong safeguards and reflects public opinion gathered through citizens' juries and surveys. Five parliaments across the UK are currently debating assisted dying proposals, with England and Wales legislation progressing slowly through the House of Lords.
