Due to an unprecedented influx of migrants arriving by small boat, staff at the Manston processing centre in Kent have been asked to work overtime. The surge, with over 1,100 migrants arriving on a single day, has brought the total this year to 14,811, a significant increase compared to last year. Persistent staffing shortages, especially during night shifts, have exacerbated the situation leading to criticisms of the centre’s conditions. Officials have highlighted the government's failure to manage asylum procedures effectively and the challenges in French waters affecting interception efforts.
The record number of small boat arrivals is partly attributed to the long-standing staff shortages at the Manston migrant processing centre, which has been criticized for poor conditions.
John Healey commented, 'Truth is, Britain's lost control of its borders... the last government last year left an asylum system in chaos and record levels of immigration.'
