A recent parliamentary inquiry reveals that forensic science in England and Wales is in crisis, highlighting serious concerns over biased investigations that lead to wrongful convictions. The inquiry, set up by the all-party parliamentary group on miscarriages of justice, criticizes recent policy decisions that have concentrated forensic work within a few commercial providers. This monopoly creates risks of failure and undermines the impartiality of evidence gathering. The report calls for an immediate halt to police in-house forensic growth and suggests removing police oversight of forensic science entirely to prevent further injustices.
Forensic science in England and Wales as currently configured isn't working for anyone... said Prof Angela Gallop, co-chair of the Westminster Commission on Forensic Science.
Like a plane hurtling downwards in what has become known as a graveyard spiral', with the pilot in desperation making increasingly erratic decisions, it can only be a short time now before it impacts the ground.
