Mother jailed for killing baby daughter after shaking her in a rage in London flat
"A mother who killed her three-month-old daughter by violently shaking her when she lost her temper has been jailed for nine and a half years. Nazli Merthoca, 24, was convicted of the manslaughter of her daughter Kaylani Kalanzi, who died after being admitted to hospital with brain injuries, a broken leg and fractured ribs. The Old Bailey heard Kaylani was on the radar of social services even before she was born and placed on a child protection plan."
"Jailing her for nine and a half years on Monday, Judge Mark Lucraft KC, the Recorder of London, called the death of the baby a loss of a precious life. The impact of the death of Kaylani will be felt by many, he told Merthoca. You will have to live with the knowledge that you killed your daughter. Benjamin Aina KC, defending,"
Nazli Merthoca, 24, violently shook her three-month-old daughter, Kaylani Kalanzi, after losing her temper, causing fatal brain injuries, a broken leg and fractured ribs. Kaylani was admitted to hospital on July 8, 2024, and died 15 days later. Kaylani had been on a child protection plan before birth and was on social services' radar. A jury convicted Merthoca of manslaughter in October after clearing her of murder. Judge Mark Lucraft KC sentenced her to nine and a half years. Prosecutors said Merthoca lost her temper after an accumulation of factors and resisted social workers' help. Her partner, Herbert Kalanzi, was acquitted.
