""blocking access to his property""
""reasonable self-defence""
""The ability for a police officer to keep their temper even when provoked is, in my submission, of paramount importance in maintaining public confidence in policing,""
PC Daniel Traynor, 38, pushed neighbour Joshua Smith after returning home and finding a vehicle blocking access to his property on 29 November 2024. A subsequent conversation and later knock on Smith’s door turned into arguments that escalated into a physical altercation. Traynor was convicted of a single charge of assault by beating at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 12 November and sentenced to 80 hours unpaid work, 15 rehabilitation activity days, and ordered to pay costs. A misconduct panel found his conduct wholly unbecoming of a police officer and dismissed him for gross misconduct. Representatives said the incident harmed Smith and public confidence in policing, and noted an officer’s need to keep their temper even when provoked. Traynor denied the allegation, claimed reasonable self-defence, and has lodged an appeal against his conviction.
