Morenikeji Adewole, a 47-year-old security guard at Heaven nightclub, faces trial for allegedly raping a 19-year-old woman. The court revealed he used a false identity to secure employment in the UK, having entered the country on a tourist visa that prohibited work. During the trial, the jury heard the woman was visibly intoxicated at the time of the assault, raising questions about consent. Adewole, who admitted to using a fake ID for work, claimed he panicked and was merely trying to support his partner while working at the nightclub.
Giving evidence, the defendant said he "used a false ID to obtain work, to get a job" and that it was "to make a living... to save for my partner - I'm the one who paid for the rent".
The jurors were told that the woman was visibly drunk and stumbling, and that a person can be too intoxicated to give proper consent.
At the time of the alleged rape, he was living in an apartment with his partner and at work supervised three other Heaven security guards.
He said he had come to the UK on vacation and later to find employment. Asked why he gave officers a false name, he said: "I was panicking, that's the name people call me at my work."
