Royal Mail to take over thousands of UK convenience stores
"Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story."
"It means high street stores will sell postage over the counter and customers can pay bills in person rather than only online. The deal, which is worth 43.9m, will also see self-service kiosks installed in some shops next year, extended opening hours including weekends and evenings plus retaining the normal operations of Collect+, which include sending and returning parcels from other carriers."
The Independent requests donations to fund on-the-ground reporting across issues including reproductive rights, climate change and Big Tech while keeping reporting free of paywalls. Donations are said to support sending journalists to interview multiple perspectives and maintain public access to journalism paid for by those who can afford it. International Distribution Services (IDS) purchased 49% of parcel firm Collect+, leading to roughly 8,000 convenience stores being rebranded Royal Mail, selling postage and enabling in-person bill payments. The £43.9m deal adds kiosks, extended hours and keeps Collect+ parcel services, while Royal Mail plans about 20,000 temporary hires for the Christmas surge.
