Surgeons from Moorfields Eye Hospital in London successfully saved the sight of over 20 Bangladeshi students wounded during July 2024 protests. Mahi Muqit and Niaz Islam evaluated 150 patients in Dhaka, operating on 24 individuals within two days. Many patients had sustained severe eye injuries, including one who had bullets lodged in his eye. The initiative, invited by Bangladesh's interim government, underscores the profound impact of timely medical intervention and the dedication of health professionals to restore vision and hope to those affected by violence.
Mahi Muqit, a senior vitreoretinal consultant at Moorfields Eye Hospital, expressed, "It's such a privilege to be able to restore sight to people who have lived with sight loss for months."
Mr Muqit highlighted the intensity of their work, stating, "It was an honour to be invited to help these people, and an intense experience for all of us."
