Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers were convicted of criminal damage for cutting down the Sycamore Gap tree and damaging Hadrian's Wall. Defenses claimed the act was fueled by drunkenness and personal issues. The tree, standing for over 100 years, was felled in three minutes. Evidence included a video of the act found on Graham's phone. Following the crime, the men distanced themselves, blaming each other. Carruthers reportedly sought a way to ease his guilt over the unfortunate incident.
Andrew Gurney, defending Adam Carruthers, explained that Carruthers admitted to wishing to cleanse his conscience, stating, "People want to know 'Why? Why did you conduct this mindless act?' Unfortunately, it is no more than drunken stupidity. He felled that tree and it is something he will regret for the rest of his life."
Chris Knox, defending Daniel Graham, described Graham as a troubled man, stating, "He is a troubled man who has had very real difficulties in his life, which have not all been of his own making."
