Two friends, Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers, face charges of criminal damage for cutting down the famous Sycamore Gap tree using a chainsaw. The act, described as moronic, was captured on video. After the incident, Graham shared voice notes with Carruthers, celebrating the viral nature of their act as news spread worldwide. Prosecutors allege that the pair took pleasure in their actions, as their messages indicated an awareness of the media attention and public outrage surrounding the incident.
Graham sent a voice note to Carruthers saying: 'Jeffrey, it's gone viral, it's gone worldwide, it will be on ITV News tonight.'
Prosecutor Richard Wright KC told the jury the pair were revelling in what they had done.
Later, Graham sent another message saying: 'Jeffrey, it's on f****** Sky News as we speak.'
