Travellers told to brace for delays as new EU entry-exit system begins on Sunday
"From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging."
"Travellers and lorry drivers have been warned they could face long delays at Dover and on the Eurostar after the new EU entry-exit system starts on Sunday. Britons travelling to Europe will be subject to new entry checks, which require non-EU citizens to scan their passport and have their fingerprints and photograph taken, from 12 October. The new entry-exit system (EES) is being phased in over the next six months, with passengers required to register on arrival in the EU."
"At Dover, the Eurostar, and the Channel Tunnel, border control checks will happen on UK soil. The EES will start on Sunday with coaches and HGV drivers at Dover and the Channel Tunnel, in Folkestone, as well as selected passengers on the Eurostar. Travellers have been warned that there may be longer waits at busy times, while the new systems are introduced, both at border crossings in the UK and on arrival in the EU."
The Independent funds on-the-ground reporting across issues including reproductive rights, climate change, and Big Tech, producing work such as the documentary 'The A Word' about American women fighting for reproductive rights. Donations enable continued reporting and allow the outlet to remain paywall-free and available across the political spectrum. New EU entry-exit system (EES) requires non-EU travellers to scan passports and provide fingerprints and photographs from 12 October, with a phased six-month rollout and registration on arrival. Border control checks will take place on UK soil at Dover, the Eurostar, and the Channel Tunnel, and delays are possible; contingency sites near Kent include Lydden Hill race track.
