Two rescued from burning building after huge Diwali fire started by fireworks in west London
"Two people were rescued from a burning building in west London after a stray firework melted through the roof, causing it to set alight. Around 40 people left the neighbouring buildings before crews arrived, but two people had to be rescued from the first floor by firefighters. No injuries were reported but fifteen people have been temporarily displaced as a result of the blaze, London Fire Brigade said."
"If you are going to host your own display, it's important to ensure you are buying safe fireworks from a reputable, licensed seller with a CE safety mark. Secure them properly in the ground, and keep them far away from buildings, trees, animals and people. Always follow the Fireworks Code and remember there are strict laws around when you can purchase and use fireworks. Never set them off if you've been drinking alcohol and once a firework is lit, never go back to it."
A stray firework melted through the roof of a storage annex at the rear of a shop in west London, setting the annex alight. Fire crews arrived after around 40 people left neighbouring buildings. Firefighters rescued two people from the first floor and brought the blaze under control just after midnight. No injuries were reported. Fifteen people were temporarily displaced. The London Fire Brigade believes the fire was accidental and urged attending organised displays, buying CE-marked fireworks from licensed sellers, securing fireworks safely, following the Fireworks Code, not using them when drinking, and disposing of spent fireworks only after cooling.
