A report by the Uyghur Human Rights Project found nearly 200 international hotels are either operating or in development in Xinjiang. This surge juxtaposes the Chinese government's campaign to bolster tourism amid scrutiny over its treatment of the Uyghur population, which several entities declare amounts to genocide. The UHRP highlighted links between some hotels and forced labor practices, illustrating the contentious nature of foreign investments in the region. Despite international condemnation and accusations of crimes against humanity, the Chinese government continues to promote Xinjiang as a tourist destination.
The UHRP identified 115 operational hotels benefiting from their presence in the Uyghur region, with at least another 74 in various stages of construction or planning.
Human Rights Watch has stated that China's policies in Xinjiang, including mass internment and forced labour, constitute crimes against humanity, calling into question the presence of foreign enterprises in the region.
