Environmental Secretary Steve Reed stated that recommendations from a report will ensure households do not face huge water bill increases again. The report recommends the installation of smart meters to manage water costs efficiently and calls for the scrapping of the regulator Ofwat. Water companies are under scrutiny for pollution incidents and poor management, as evidenced by a significant rise in serious pollution events. Reed aims to halve sewage discharge incidents by 2030 while addressing criticism regarding limited reforms, including excluding renationalization of the water industry.
Households will "never again" face huge rises in water bills, the environment secretary has claimed, following a report into reforming the "broken" industry.
Steve Reed stated that recommendations set out in the review will "prevent the circumstances" that have led to an average 30% rise in household water bills between now and 2030.
The report by Sir Jon Cunliffe suggested the compulsory installation of smart meters in homes to keep on top of water costs, as well as scrapping the regulator Ofwat.
Campaigner Feargal Sharkey criticized the government for limiting the scope of the report to exclude renationalising the water industry in England and Wales.
