Angela Rayner's job is on the line and she knows it
Briefly

The Independent covers issues from reproductive rights and climate change to Big Tech, conducting investigations such as Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC finances and producing a documentary spotlighting American women fighting for reproductive rights. The outlet emphasizes parsing facts from messaging and offers free access to reporting, relying on donations to fund journalists on the ground. Angela Rayner admitted failing to pay tax properly, which appears to accelerate her exit from government. Her admission contrasts with prior outspoken criticism of ministers who avoided resigning over misconduct and follows a prime minister insisting on removing officials who fail his standards.
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground.
Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story. The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
It is a remarkable turn of fortune for a politician who until today was considered a potential leadership candidate, should Sir Keir Starmer's woeful poll ratings continue to fall. But given her own outspoken criticism of former Tory ministers for not resigning over misconduct when she was in opposition - one rule for them, another for everybody else - she at the very least looks like a hypocrite for not resigning but in reality may still rapidly be running out of time.
