Asylum protests putting police under chronic pressure, chief says
Briefly

Protests against the use of hotels to house asylum seekers have significantly increased policing demands across the UK, with 3,081 notifications between June and 25 August compared with 2,942 last summer and 928 in 2023. Police have diverted neighbourhood officers to public order duties and used mutual aid to send reinforcements to forces under pressure. Senior police leadership urged leaders to reduce tension and avoid spreading misinformation while defending the right to protest. Large campaigns, notably outside the Bell Hotel in Epping, have required hundreds of officers to separate opposing groups and prevent access. Dozens more protests are planned.
