The Greater Manchester Combined Authority will run a Safe Transitions programme to help people with asylum backgrounds overcome barriers to housing, benefits, and integration services after refugee status is granted. The initiative supports individuals moving out of Home Office accommodation into local communities, with guidance and additional support aimed at reducing homelessness and improving access to housing, welfare, and employment services. GMCA currently supports more than 8,500 people in asylum accommodation across Greater Manchester, including hotels and temporary lodgings. Refugees will also be matched with “resident landlords” via a lodging initiative to prevent homelessness during a 42-day transition period after Home Office support ends. The estimated combined value of the new guidance contract and housing scheme is over £700,000, including about £370,000 for developing the support framework and about £350,000 for the lodging scheme.
"The programme, run by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA), is designed to help people with asylum backgrounds navigate what officials describe as "barriers" to housing, benefits and integration services once they have been granted refugee status."
