Cutting home insulation funding will imperil UK's climate goals, Reeves told
"In their letter, the dozens of organisations from Age UK and Citizens Advice to Friends of the Earth called for the Treasury to reconsider cuts to the ECO programme, saying it would call into question the ability to meet both the UK's fuel poverty and carbon budget targets. They also warned that it was putting thousands of jobs at risk in the 20bn energy efficiency industry and supply chain."
"We welcome the news that you are planning to take action to cut households' energy bills at the upcoming budget, which is crucial to address cost of living challenges and boost the economy, the letter said. However, it is vital that this is not at the expense of investment in energy efficiency measures and low-carbon technologies, which permanently lower households' bills."
More than 60 organisations and companies urged the chancellor not to cut funding for home insulation and the energy company obligation (ECO), warning that such cuts would jeopardise the UK's ability to meet fuel poverty and carbon budget targets. The groups said reducing green levies to lower bills by up to £170 risks undermining long-term solutions that permanently reduce household energy costs. They highlighted that ECO funds improvements for low-income and vulnerable households, and warned that cuts would put thousands of jobs at risk across the £20bn energy efficiency industry and its supply chain. The groups called for investment in decarbonising homes instead of one-off bill support.
