Elections watchdog considers looking into 5m gift to Farage
"The Commission's Regulatory Action Panel Manager, Eleanor Pearch, stated, 'I can confirm that we are aware of this matter and are considering it under our regulatory remit.'"
"A Reform UK spokesperson emphasized that 'the money was given as an unconditional gift' to Farage, who had not publicly committed to stand for Parliament at that time."
"The Conservatives argue that Farage needed to declare the money, believing he should be treated as a 'regulated donee' under Electoral Commission rules."
The Electoral Commission for England and Wales is reviewing a £5m donation made to Nigel Farage by Christopher Harborne in early 2024. The Conservatives suggested that Farage should have declared this donation as a regulated donee. Reform UK claims the donation was an unconditional gift for security purposes, made when Farage had not yet committed to standing as an MP. The Commission is assessing the situation and will respond to the Conservatives by 12 May, after upcoming elections.
