Ex-ballerina and former minister in race to be next Lord Speaker
"If there was a lady of the night, a tart, a harlot or a prostitute to be played, you can bet I was up there doing it."
"I always thought I'd feel a passionate sense of loss when I stopped dancing. What was absolutely wonderful was, as the volume turned up on the new career, the volume turned down on the old one."
Peers will vote from 6 to 8 January to choose the next Lord Speaker, with the winner announced the following week subject to the King's approval. The Lord Speaker chairs debates, decides whether ministers should be summoned to answer urgent questions, and performs ceremonial roles including at the State Opening of Parliament. The contest follows Lord John McFall stepping down to care for his wife after a Parkinson's diagnosis. Candidates include Baroness Deborah Bull, a former Royal Ballet principal dancer who became a creative director, broadcaster and non-party peer in 2018 and deputy speaker in 2024, and former Conservative minister Lord Michael Forsyth. Baroness Bull's candidacy is supported by Labour peer Baroness Thornton and former national security adviser Lord Ricketts.
