Sarah Atherton resigned from the Conservative Party, describing it as "impotent" and saying it no longer aligns with her values or ideology. She lost the Wrexham seat at the 2024 general election after serving as MP from 2019 and briefly held a defence people, veterans and service families ministerial role in 2022. Atherton said she intends to pursue a Senedd seat in Cardiff Bay next May and cited social work experience as relevant to that aim. She has not confirmed a new party and said the Conservative selection process prevents her standing for them. Wales will use a new map where 16 seats elect six members from party lists.
