Fury as historic London department store gets green light to become hotel
"If you are to accept it, then local residents demand firm conditions be placed on the site to ensure that it must be used for the purpose intended in this application rooms to boost tourism, to attract visitors to Tooting, to spend money in our local area."
"This does feel like a wasted opportunity to provide new housing rather than yet another hotel. It would be nice, if we possibly could, to push things in that direction."
A historic south London department store closed after the operator determined it could not justify the funds required to maintain and update the building. Criterion Capital, owner of the Zedwell hotel chain, purchased the site and will convert most of the building into a 92-bed hotel while retaining part of the ground floor for shops. The council planning committee approved the conversion on October 23, replacing earlier permission to largely demolish the building for 24 flats. Around 400 residents signed a petition expressing concern that the hotel could later be used as temporary accommodation, and councillors requested firm conditions or preferred housing provision.
