The government's strategy for addressing child poverty has been postponed, with expectations for publication in autumn, potentially aligning with the Budget. The Child Poverty Taskforce, co-chaired by Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall, is debating proposals including the contentious two-child benefit cap. Critics like the SNP express disappointment over the delay, while some, such as Trussell Trust’s Helen Barnard, see potential for a more substantial strategy. The government continues to implement measures to combat poverty, citing initiatives like free breakfast clubs and benefits uprating.
The Child Poverty Taskforce is still working on the strategy and has been considering, among other measures, whether to scrap the two-child benefit cap.
Helen Barnard, director of policy at Trussell Trust charity said, 'Better a delayed child poverty strategy with measures to really protect children from hunger and hardship, than one hitting the deadline but falling short on substance.'
