"Hannah Spencer received 14,980 votes, nearly 41% of all votes cast, and there was a swing of 26.4% from Labour to Greens. Reform UK's Matt Goodwin came second with 10,578, while Labour's Angeliki Stogia was third with 9,364. The Conservative's Charlotte Cadden came fifth with 706 votes, and the Liberal Democrats' Jackie Pearcey had 653."
"The Greens' victory at Gorton and Denton represents the sixth largest Labour majority to be overturned at a by-election since the Second World War. This is the second by-election since Labour's general election victory in 2024 and the party's second loss to a party with only a handful of sitting MPs."
"In her victory speech Spencer said she would 'fight' for those who have been 'left behind'. She said that for too many in the constituency 'a nice life' was no longer possible, with people instead 'working to line the pockets of billionaires'. 'I will always work hard for you and I will always be honest and I will always be decent,' she added."
Hannah Spencer of the Green Party won the Gorton and Denton by-election with 14,980 votes (41% of votes cast), overturning Labour's previous 50% majority. Reform UK came second with 10,578 votes, pushing Labour into third place with 9,364 votes. The 26.4% swing from Labour to Greens represents the sixth largest Labour majority overturned at a by-election since World War II. The by-election was triggered by former Labour health minister Andrew Gwynne's resignation following his loss of the Labour whip for offensive WhatsApp messages. Spencer promised to fight for those left behind and work for all communities in the constituency.
