In August 1981, women protested against the storage of US nuclear missiles in the UK, leading to the Greenham Common peace camp. Recently, the UK government announced plans to expand its nuclear arsenal by purchasing American F-35A fighter jets, reigniting fears of nuclear threats. Figures from the original protests, such as Ann Pettitt, express disillusionment but hope that younger activists will continue the fight against nuclear arms, emphasizing the dangers of these weapons and calling for peaceful protest.
Nuclear weapons are like the emperor's new clothes, they can't be used and if they are they backfire because of radiation spreads and they target civilians.
At its height, more than 70,000 women were there and it became the biggest female-led protest since women's suffrage.
