Gunnersbury station's step-free plans advance - but commuters still waiting for Godot
"As part of the planning permission to refurbish the office building next to the station into residential flats, the developer will provide funding for design studies and set aside land for the station upgrade. However, there's no funding to rebuild the station itself. A couple of concept images were shown off as part of the planning application, but at this stage, they are just concepts."
"The developer has agreed to provide a further £50,000 for a technical study to assess the station's current structural condition, enabling Network Rail and TfL to have a better idea of the cost of rebuilding the station. It would then be for Network Rail, which owns the station, working with TfL to put forward the case for a station upgrade, which would cost many millions to deliver."
"Marie Rabouhans, Chair of the West Chiswick & Gunnersbury Society, said that "Waiting for an accessible station is like waiting for Godot""
The developer will fund design studies and reserve land adjacent to Gunnersbury Station as part of a residential redevelopment, but will not fund the station rebuild. Two concept options have been presented: a basic platform and access upgrade to the existing ticket hall, or a larger rebuild including a new entrance; both concepts include a lift for step-free access. The developer has committed £50,000 for a technical structural study to inform cost estimates. Network Rail owns the station and would need to work with TfL to make the case for a multi-million pound upgrade. Local frustration exists over delays and lack of funding, and councillors were asked to press Hounslow Council to consider unlocking CIL funds.
