Hegseth: UK special relationship with US meaningless unless it boosts defence
Pete Hegseth warned that Britain’s special relationship with the United States is meaningless without shared military capabilities. Speaking in Singapore at the Shangri-La Dialogue, he said model allies that comply with US demands will receive arms sales and intelligence access. He added that allies viewed as freeloading on US capabilities will be penalized. He referenced conversations with UK defence secretary Richard Marles and Australian defence minister John Healey. He argued alliances require comparable capabilities to ensure “locking arms and shields” against global threats.
"Giving a speech in Singapore, Pete Hegseth said that model allies who comply with US demands will benefit from arms sales and access to intelligence, while those seen to be freeloading on US capabilities will be penalised."
