A councillor warned that the Farranfore bypass project is freezing development in a key village. Concerns were raised about children crossing a busy junction near Knockaderry National School in Farranfore, where an issue has existed for many years. A councillor said waiting for the bypass to divert traffic is not acceptable because it would be too slow. The Farranfore bypass began in 2003, progressed significantly, and was suspended in 2012 due to the financial crisis. In 2019, the Department of Transport approved revisiting the scheme and announced the preferred route the previous year. Another councillor said the bypass has effectively delayed other road projects and is holding the village to ransom.
"Councillor Fionnán Fitzgerald asked for an update on improved safety measures at Knockaderry National School in Farranfore. He said there had been an issue there for a 'long number of years' with children crossing at a busy junction. Cllr Fitzgerald said that waiting for the construction of bypass to divert traffic away from the junction was 'not good enough' and would be 'too slow'."
""I won't say deathtrap, that's a strong fiery word, but there is considerable risk to children using that junction on the way to school," he said. The Farranfore bypass project began in 2003 and was significantly progressed until it was suspended in 2012 owing to the financial crisis of the time. In 2019, the Department of Transport gave approval to have the scheme revisited, announcing the preferred route of the road last year."
"Councillor Jackie Healy-Rae seconded Cllr Fitzgerald's motion, adding that the prospect of the bypass had seemed to result in other road projects being dropped. "It's almost like nothing will progress in Farranfore until the bypass is delivered," he said. "Councillor Fitzgerald is not 100pc right, he's 1000pc right that we can't be waiting for this. The bypass is going to be great but it's holding the village to ransom almost.""
