Jess Phillips said Labour has been sexist because it has never had a permanent female leader. She described institutions as being led by patriarchy and said Labour’s situation reflects that pattern. Phillips resigned as minister for safeguarding and violence against women and girls on 12 May after citing loss of confidence in Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Wes Streeting resigned on 14 May for similar reasons. Labour has only had acting female leaders, including Margaret Beckett and Harriet Harman. A leadership contest this summer appears unlikely to change the record, with Andy Burnham likely to lead if he wins the Makerfield byelection on 18 June, and Streeting competing from the party’s right. Angela Rayner was cleared by HMRC but has not declared a bid and plans to campaign for Burnham.
"Phillips said she hoped for wild cards in a leadership contest, but refused to specify who they might be. It's whether Keir Starmer would stand in the contest, I suppose, is the wild card bit of it. If Starmer does not step down, he would automatically appear on the ballot. Phillips appeared at a panel event alongside the Green party's Ellie Chowns and the Times journalist Patrick Maguire."
