Labour MP would quit seat for Starmer challenge
"Do you know what? If I'm going to sit here and say country before party, party before personal ambition, then yes, I have to say yes, don't I."
"country before party, party before personal ambition"
"no intention of abandoning Manchester"
Clive Lewis said he is willing to resign his Norwich South seat to allow Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham to return to the Commons and mount a challenge to Sir Keir Starmer for Labour leadership. Lewis said he had spoken to Burnham and framed the offer as putting country before party and party before personal ambition. Lewis described Sir Keir's position as Prime Minister as "untenable" and urged Burnham to "step up." Burnham earlier said he had "no intention of abandoning Manchester" but did not rule out a leadership challenge. Lewis has been an MP for ten years and last year increased his majority to more than 13,000. Any successor would need to win a selection contest before a by-election could be held. Number 10 declined to comment and Burnham was contacted for comment.
