Following a Supreme Court ruling affirming the legality of wild camping in Dartmoor, Labour backbenchers are urging the government to reinstate a broader right to roam policy in England. Currently, only 8% of England allows free access to land, with the rest being private. In contrast, Scotland has enjoyed this right since 2003. The idea faced opposition from countryside groups, leading to a government stance promoting responsible access rather than free-for-all rights. Labour MPs stress the importance of expanding these rights to enhance public engagement with the countryside and nature.
It's time to resolve the issues of access to the English countryside once and for all.
Our intention is to increase access to the countryside, but in a responsible way, not as a free-for-all.
