Migrant sex offender released from prison in error arrested after manhunt
"Hadush Kebatu has been arrested and will be deported. Officers have worked quickly and diligently to bring him back into custody. We have ordered an investigation to establish what went wrong."
"Essex Police said he boarded a London-bound train at Chelmsford railway station at 12.41pm following the error."
"He was spotted on CCTV inside a library in Dalston Square, Hackney, at 6pm that night as Metropolitan Police detectives took over the hunt for the sex offender."
Hadush Kebatu, 41, who sexually assaulted a woman and a 14-year-old girl, was mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford instead of being sent to an immigration detention centre for deportation. Essex Police reported he boarded a London-bound train from Chelmsford station and was later seen on CCTV in a Dalston Square library. Metropolitan Police detectives led a major manhunt and tracked reports that placed him in Finsbury Park, where a member of the public spotted him and police arrested him for being unlawfully at large. Ministers ordered investigations and immediate strengthening of release checks, and calls were made for a rapid national inquiry.
