"Speaking at the Prison Officers' Association (POA) annual conference last May, Mr O'Callaghan said it was "embarrassing" that legislation enacted in 2007 to introduce electronic tagging for prisoners on temporary release had still not come into effect."
Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan's initiative to implement electronic tagging for certain prisoners by the end of the previous year has encountered another delay. The setback stems from a lack of viable tender responses for supplying the electronic tagging service. O'Callaghan previously acknowledged at the Prison Officers' Association annual conference that the situation was embarrassing, noting that legislation enabling electronic tagging for prisoners on temporary release had been enacted in 2007 but remained unimplemented. The repeated delays continue to prevent the activation of this long-standing legislative provision.
