"The Councillor Pledge for Palestine is urging politicians to take steps to uphold the rights of Palestinians, stand up to Israel for its crimes of genocide and apartheid and ensure their councils are not complicit."
"Local Government Pension Scheme funds, administered by councils, invest more than 12.2 billion pounds ($16.5bn) in companies that are complicit in violations of international law, according to the Palestine Solidarity Campaign."
"It aims to pressure councils to adopt policies aligned with the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, including divesting pension funds from companies linked to Israeli arms production."
The Palestine Solidarity Campaign launched the Councillor Pledge for Palestine in December to mobilize local politicians in support of Palestinian rights. The campaign has secured signatures from 1,152 sitting councillors across multiple parties, with the largest support from the Green Party, Labour Party, and Liberal Democrats. The initiative aims to pressure councils to adopt Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions policies, specifically targeting Local Government Pension Scheme investments in companies linked to Israeli arms production. According to the campaign, these pension funds hold over 12.2 billion pounds in such investments. Thirty-one councils have already passed motions supporting divestment, and polling indicates 46 percent of voters support this approach compared to 14 percent opposition.
